Where does the world's biggest Elephant live?
You can find the biggest "Jumbo"in the world, right in the center of Maximilianpark. This giant Glass Elephant was conjured up by German architect and artist, Horst Rellecke, who was called upon in 1984 to reinvent the old coal mine washery building.
Visitors can enter this walk-in sculpture and take an elevator located in the base of the elephant`s trunk all the way to the top. Along this 35 meter ride you have a fantastic panoramic view overseeing the park premises, the city of Hamm, and the surrounding scenic Westphalian countryside. And once at the top, an entire garden of interactional art awaits the visitors of the glass elephant.
For example, the "Durstige Huhn" (Thirsty Hen) sprays water at surrounding plants and the "Gottesanbeterin" (Praying Mantis) climbs a metal branch slowly but surely. All of this wonderment awaits you just at the push of a button, so why not give it a try?
