Never before in Germany, has a former desolate and disused factory site been revived and transformed into a natural wonderland, such as Maximilianpark. This lively industrial venue is a center for cultural and tourist events; yet, continues to remain true to its past.

Having once been the eastern anchor of the Industrial Heritage Trail, Maxipark continues to be seen as the site of one of the most important industrial monuments of the region. The site was redesigned to include both nature and mining history, and whilst wandering through the park keep your eyes open for traces of the mine still present to this day. The remains of the colliery might not be as apparent, since they have now become integrated into the landscape and also relocated for artistic expression. The most striking creative achievement has been the transformation of the former coal washing plant into the jumbo walk-in sculpture of the Glass Elephant. Visitors can also take in the beautiful architecture of the former electric powerstation and "Werkstatthalle" (Workshop hall), where you can also find various exhibitions.

To this day Maximilianpark continues to build upon its rich program of activities and just pure natural beauty. So we encourage you to embark on a journey of discovery through the countless Maxipark pathways, because you just never know what you might stumble upon.
