At the beginning of the 1980's, the city of Hamm decided to put the abandoned area to new use. The idea? Have it be the site of the first "Landesgartenschau” (State Garden Show) of North Rhine-Westphalia.

In 1984 the doors opened, and one year later the former coal mine Maximilian was renamed Maximilianpark and has been open to the public ever since.
