The Park

A Park on Coal.

The Maximilianpark was built in 1984 on the area of the former Maximilian colliery on the occasion of the first regional horticultural show. The widely visible glass elephant is the emblem of the city of Hamm. The artist, Dr. Horst Rellecke, transformed the colliery’s former coal washing plant into a sculpture around which you can walk today. However, the Maximilianpark has far more to offer its 350,000 visitors a year:

The Children’s Playland…
… is a paradise for children Whether old or young – nobody will become bored on our many theme playgrounds. Here their little ones can climb like the big ones in the toddlers’ climbing parcours, the big ones can swing from tree to tree in the jungle playground, look for treasures in the old mine or just get really wet in the valley of the thousand waters. There’s no such thing as boredom here.

More than 6 kilometres of walking trails…
… take you through colourful gardens, perennial and grass plantations, seasonally changing beds, through unspoilt dumping sites, on past a pond and swamp area to the various theme gardens. Immerse yourself in a world of art and nature. In all areas of the park, seating invite you to linger and relax. The lakeside terraces on the artificially laid-out Maximiliansee invite you to take a relaxing break amidst the colourful shore plants. You will be spoilt here by our caterer.

Glittering butterflies…

… show their flying skills in the largest butterfly house of North Rhine-Westphalia. Experience a tropical paradise on 450 sqm and be within touching distance of more than 80 species of tropical butterflies. Enjoy this quiet and extraordinary atmosphere, a paradise with colourful butterflies, flowering plants and a stream in a tropical climate.

Music & Comedy, Festivals & Markets, Exhibitions & Workshops…
… the old buildings of the colliery not only offer the setting, but are also the stage and technology for a variety of events on more than 200 occasions per year. In the open air or in the halls, in large rooms or seminar rooms – the Maximilianpark offers space for a varied cultural programme.

Spend some free time in the Maximilianpark Hamm – because here you can find “more than just flowers”.
