The largest tropical butterfly house in NRW
Up to 80 different butterfly species from the tropical regions of South and Central America, Africa, Thailand, Malaysia and the Philippines all live for the course of one season in NRW’s largest tropical butterfly house . The butterflies fly freely throughout the 450 sqm tropical paradise. Marvel at night butterflies the size of a palm like the Atlas silk spinner and see how it remains almost motionless throughout its day’s sleep.
Origin of our butterflies
The breeders comply with the requirements of the International Convention for the Protection of Species (C. I. T. T. E. S.), which prohibits any wild capture of protected species. Our tropical butterflies come exclusively as offsprings from butterfly farms and are not protected. During the course of a season, up to 80 different butterfly species from the tropical regions of South and Central America, Africa, Australia and Asia can be seen. In our butterfly house the butterflies live longer than in the wild because they have no natural enemies. Every Sunday, a staff member of the Green Classroom is available in the house and will be happy to answer questions (2 to 4 pm). A visitor’s video and a video tour of our butterfly house can be found here:
