Butterfly house

The largest tropical butterfly house in NRW

Up to 80 different butterfly species from the tropical regions of South and Central America, Africa, Thailand, Malaysia and the Philippines all live for the course of one season in NRW’s largest tropical butterfly house . The butterflies fly freely throughout the 450 sqm tropical paradise. Marvel at night butterflies the size of a palm like the Atlas silk spinner and see how it remains almost motionless throughout its day’s sleep.

The breeders comply with the requirements of the International Convention for the Protection of Species (C. I. T. T. E. S.), which prohibits any wild capture of protected species. Our tropical butterflies come exclusively as offsprings from butterfly farms and are not protected. During the course of a season, up to 80 different butterfly species from the tropical regions of South and Central America, Africa, Australia and Asia can be seen. In our butterfly house the butterflies live longer than in the wild because they have no natural enemies. Every Sunday, a staff member of the Green Classroom is available in the house and will be happy to answer questions (2 to 4 pm). A visitor’s video and a video tour of our butterfly house can be found here:

Information for photographers

Our tip for you

Saturday morning is a good time for taking pictures as well as in the afternoons from Mondays to Fridays from 1 pm. Sunday is not such a good day for photographing. That is the day when most visitors are in the house.

Our request to you

Avoid photographing with flash light to protect the animals. Working with tripods is allowed in the house, but is also a hindrance for other visitors. Please show the necessary respect! Take as little “luggage” as possible into the house, use our cloakrooms or ask our staff in the shop.

Offers for visitors and groups

As a visitor, you are welcome to explore the butterfly house on your own and discover the fascinating world of tropical butterflies. Every Sunday, a staff member of the Green Classroom is available in the house and will be happy to answer visitors questions (2 to 4 pm). Folding panels in the house indicate interesting features. You can also download a Researcher’s Sheet here. It is suitable for children of 9 years of age or more. In addition, we are happy to arrange events for kindergartens, school classes, adults or children’s birthdays.

Our tip for you

Even if you have not yet decided to buy a combination ticket (reduction for school classes/children groups of 10 or more children) at the main box office, you can still do this at the cash desk in the Butterfly House.

Our request to you

We find it very helpful if school classes/children or groups of seniors (even those who have not booked a guided tour) register themselves in the Butterfly House in advance by telephone (+49(0)2381/98210-38)!
